If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, you get a once-per-year chance (Jan 1–Mar 31) to switch to a different MA plan (with or without drug coverage) or return to Original Medicare and join a Part D plan. Any change generally starts the first day of the month after the plan gets your request.
When this is useful
- Your doctors/pharmacies changed network status on Jan 1.
- Your meds moved to a higher tier or need new prior auth.
- You tried MA and prefer Original Medicare + Part D (or vice-versa).
Also running Jan 1–Mar 31: the General Enrollment Period for people who need to sign up for Part B (and/or Part A if not premium-free). Coverage starts the month after you enroll, and late-enrollment penalties can apply if you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
Quick checklist
- Make a fresh med list (drug + dose + frequency) and your preferred pharmacies.
- Confirm doctors and hospitals you want in 2026.
- Compare total drug costs and networks; then submit changes before March 31.
